Well, this was an interesting week – not my favorite as far as performances, yet very enjoyable, mostly because of the duets. Before I break out the individual performances, let me say that they were all really good, but the duets are what captivated me.
The Duets – “Renegade” with Kris Allen & Danny Gokey & “Slow Ride” with Allison Iraheta & Adam Lambert
First of all, I’m not a rocker at heart, so I don’t have the appreciation for this week’s music that rock lovers do. Maybe that’s why I enjoyed Kris and Danny’s rendition of “Renegade” over Allison and Adam’s “Slow Ride”. Apples for apples, I think Allison and Adam did a better job on “Slow Ride”, particularly because their voices are perfect for the type of song that they were singing and you could tell that they were loving it. Personally though, I preferred listening to Danny and Kris sing “Renegade” as they were able to bring the song a bit more into a likeable style for me – genre-wise. I don’t think Kris and Danny were as vocally on target as they usually are individually, but their harmonies were really nice, even if a tad bit pitchy at times.
As for the individual performances, well, here’s my breakdown – in order
Kris Allen
This week, I suppose it would only be typical that I’d pick my favorite to have had the best performance. I thought Kris nailed it with his version of “Come Together” by the Beatles. For him, it was a great song choice, given his guitar playing and vocals. I thought his performance was right on and vocally precise. His interpretation was good too. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot.
Danny Gokey
Danny’s rendition of “Dream On” started out excellent. In fact, when he first started singing the song, I thought “wow, this sounds really good”. To me, this song was more interesting than many of the rest of Danny’s performances. BUT, then he got to the end and started screaming. It just became way too much for him and kind of ruined the song. Even still, I enjoyed the performance. I think if he could find a way to tone down the ending a bit and make it more unique to his particular voice, the song could be one of his best on Idol. Just my opinion.
Allison Iraheta – Goodbye
Ok, Allison’s departure seems kind of shocking, yet it’s not, given that there were only four contestants left at this point. I think we all hate to see her go, particularly as she’s been performing so well on the show and becoming more likeable by the week. Her version of “Cry Baby” was solid and a great performance. And I thought she did an amazing job performing after she found out she was going home. This song was definitely not my favorite performance for Allison, but she sang her heart out. Honestly, even though someone had to go, I think she might have had a chance of staying another week, had she picked a song that was more familiar to the public. I don’t know every song out there, but I’d never heard this one before. I think that might have actually hurt her. I hate to see Allison leave American Idol, but it’s so clear this girl has an amazing career ahead of her.
Adam Lambert
I saved Adam Lambert for last because his performance – I enjoyed the least. It’s not that he didn’t do a smash, bang-up job singing “Whole Lotta Love”. It’s probably as much about my personal preference as anything. I just don’t enjoy all the wailing and screaming, but you know that already. If you’re an Adam Lambert fan, you should be proud of his performance, because he did a great job. To be honest though, everything about Adam’s voice that keeps me from liking him – mainly the wailing and screaming (even though on pitch and incredibly high) was represented this week. That being said, the public loves him, which will probably guarantee his win on American Idol, although I’m more convinced now than ever that this could turn out to be Kris Allen’s or Danny Gokey’s win just as easily.
I can’t wait to see what’s in store next week.
