American Idol Bids Farewell to Dolly Parton Look-Alike, Alexis Grace

by Rick Osborn on March 19, 2009

Howard Cohen of the Miami Herald commented today on Alexis Grace’s departure:

“American Idol viewers cast aside the season’s most gifted contestant on Wednesday’s results show, the colorful Alexis Grace, and the judges foolishly didn’t use their one-time-only Save option. Shame. Idol’s left with a weak Top 10.”

While I certainly respect Mr. Cohen’s opinion, I have to disagree. Alexis Grace is an extremely talented singer, but I don’t think she was yet able to prove that she’s the best out of the talented pool of singers on Idol. In my opinion, her performance on Tuesday night was decent, but Wednesday night’s definitely went downhill. But, that’s not surprising. Can you imagine having to perform under that kind of pressure? I’m not sure I could. I suppose it’s always possible that the judges might bring her back at a later date, if they don’t use their “one-time-only” Save option on someone else.

While all of the singers display an amazing ability for singing, I definitely think that there are others that remain who trail Alexis in vocal ability. I feel pretty confident that they’ll be voted off as well in the next few weeks. I won’t mention them yet, but I suspect that I’ll be doing so shortly in the next week or two. Needless to say, they were in the bottom three on Wednesday night’s show, in my humble opinion.

Alexis Grace – Her Song Choice – Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”

“Jolene” is pretty much a country classic at this point, just like its original singer – Dolly Parton. I think it’s really interesting that Alexis Grace chose this song. I commented to a buddy of mine a couple of weeks ago about how much Alexis Grace looked like Dolly Parton, without the bustline – of course. So, maybe she was just trying to play on this particular “look-alike” fact. Anyway you slice it though, it just didn’t work for her. I’m not going to get all vocally technical with it, but it just didn’t please my ears to hear it. There’s really nothing else to say. She’s an amazing talented individual, I just think she chose the wrong song and/or arrangement in this case.

Obviously the voters and the judges felt the same way too. It is a shame though that she was voted off, but that’s American Idol. Someone has to go each week. I have to admit that I didn’t expect it to be her, especially in light of some of the ones left.
