Kris Allen

First performance and singing “The Way You Look Tonight”, he set an amazing precedent for all the performances that followed. As always, Kris added his crooning flair to a classic song. Of course, this musical genre is one of my favorites. I thought Kris did an amazing job on this song and was definitely one of my favorite performances of the night. The fact that he ended up in the bottom three was a bit shocking, but come on, there were only five to choose from. With so few left, anyone could have ended up in the bottom three.

Goodbye Matt Giraud

Matt’s rendition of “My Funny Valentine” was nothing to sneeze at. I suppose the saddest part of his performance is that he set us up to expect it to be his best, by stating that he’d been waiting for this moment to perform this genre of song. I don’t think it was any surprise going into this week that he was pretty much the underdog, given his previous vote off and then “save” by the judges. Could he have done any better? Perhaps, but I thought his rendition was very good, but obviously not enough so to propel him past his Idol contenders. I will say this though, his departure was full of grace, style and humility. The class that he showed was something that everyone will remember when they see his first album on the shelf for sale. Best of luck to you Matt Giraud!

Danny Gokey

His rendition of “Come Rain or Come Shine” was excellently performed. Again, I think Danny’s definitely going to be one to reckon with for the winner spot on American Idol, although his voice still doesn’t appeal to me as much as others, like Anoop’s or Kris Allen’s for that matter, but this week definitely displayed that he’s one to contend with for the top spot. One thing is for sure – he’s consistently performing at a top notch level every week.

Allison Iraheta

Allison’s performance of “Someone to Watch Over Me” was probably my favorite of hers yet. Her mature, smoky, almost gruff sounding vocals mellowed out with this rendition of this amazing standard. When she sings softer and with heightened emotion, she’s downright moving. I think Allison Iraheta, after this week, actually has a good chance of winning, given her performance. It’s obvious though, that she’s an amazing singer and much more versatile that I originally thought. And I like the way that she’s starting to tone down her look. It’s definitely making her less offensive in presentation and more personable.

Adam Lambert

Coming down from his “heavenly” staircase in his “glorious” white suite to grace us with his overwhelming presence, Adam Lambert was obviously “Feeling Good” as he sang. The only problem is, as usual, he went overboard with the theatrics and the wailing. Not only that, but I think he came off as a bit arrogant. The other thing is that the whole time he was singing, I kept hearing and comparing him to Michael Buble in my head and his wailing moments turned me off in comparison. I guess this week, he got knocked down a few notches and had to sweat it out as one of the BOTTOM TWO! That’s something I’m sure even talented Adam never suspected would happen to him. I know the judges were stunned, as was I when he was left standing next to Matt Giraud in anxious uncertainty about his Idol fate. Perhaps it was just a fluke, but a good dose of humility never hurts. I still tend to think he’s going to grab the top spot, but I’m not as certain as I had been.

After this week’s surprising results, things seem to be a bit upside down. I can’t wait to see what happens next week. Rest assured, all four that remain will have no problem rising to the occasion of “Rock and Roll” week.
