American Idol Recap – Matt Giraud Voted Off & Saved – Top 7 Remain

Matt Giraud performs Have You Really Ever Loved a Woman on American Idol - www.RecordingWiz.com uses Mixcraft for easy home studio recording, voiceovers, music CD, podcasts

Well, another week of American Idol is under our belts. I really enjoyed this week’s performances, although the voting outcome was not what I expected. In my estimation, Anoop Desai did not deserve to be in the bottom three, neither did Matt Giraud for that matter, but I guess we have to consider who’s actually left in the competition – not too many. It’s getting down to the wire and it’s time to start thinning out the crowd.

At this stage of the game, it’s as much about likeability and showmanship as it is raw talent. The fact is, Matt Giraud and Anoop Desai both have an amazing amount of vocal ability. If I had to choose who has more talent, I’d give Matt a bit more overall, only for the fact that he’s able to perform so well at the piano while he sings. But, if I were choosing just the voice, I’d definitely choose Anoop, but that’s just my personal preference.

Lil Rounds performs the Rose on American Idol - www.RecordingWiz.com uses Mixcraft for easy home studio recording, voiceovers, music CD, podcasts

I don’t even want to talk about Lil Rounds, because she just needs to go. She has absolutely zero chance of winning the competition. In fact, she should have been sent home three weeks ago, not because she’s a bad person or because she’s not a decent singer, but because she has been perpetually disappointing for the last several weeks. Her rendition of “The Rose” sounded pitchy and awkward. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, she sounds like glorified karaoke. She lacks individuality and precision. This competition is about having star quality. I’m just not seeing it in her.

American Idol Castaway Matt Giraud – Saved by the Judges this Week

Matt is good, but I guess when you get down to the nitty gritty of the whole group, he did belong in the bottom three, but certainly he shouldn’t have been discarded before Lil. Of course, I don’t think Alexis Grace deserved to be voted off before Lil Rounds either. I wasn’t crazy about Matt’s rendition of “Have You Really Ever Loved a Woman”. It was pitchy and a bit off and just bothered me. I’ll be pretty shocked if he doesn’t go next week, since there will be two voted off. I’m not surprised that the judges saved him, given his talent. The voteoff was displaced with Lil remaining. At any rate, there’s no more wild card from here on out.

American Idol Top Performance of the Week – Kris Allen

This is purely subjective, and honestly, just for ease of listening and sheer likeability, I chose Kris Allen’s rendition of “Falling Slowly”. I thought it was beautiful and packed with emotion. Randy Jackson called it pitchy and didn’t like it. He must have been sleep during the performance. At least Kara and Simon got it right.

I would place Anoop Desai in second place with his version of “Everything I Do, I Do It for You”. Again, this is purely subjective. I know that there are those out there who thought Danny Gokey’s “Endless Love”, Adam Lambert’s “Born to Be Wild” or Allison Iraheta’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” was the best. Personally, I was moved the most by Kris’ song, followed by Anoop’s, followed by Danny’s, followed by Allison, followed by Adam Lambert – in that particular order. Adam’s “Born to Be Wild” was entertaining, but for me was way over the top. Also, after watching Allison online for the second time, I liked her song even less than I thought I did. She was pitchy and not too pleasant sounding to me.

It’ll be interesting to see who remains after next week. My guess is we’ll be saying goodbye to Lil Rounds and Matt Giraud, but that could just be wishful thinking. I think we all know that Adam’s got the best chance of being the last man standing, although I think Danny and Kris, in particular, are turning up the heat.

In terms of performance, I think this was Lil’s week to go. She used to be considered a top 3 favorite, now look at her. Zero charisma, so-so singing and bad choice week after week with her songs.

I think Matt’s save was based purely on jacking up the dramatic tension for this week, and next. Simon’s right. Matt’s not going to win, but I guess the “save” would have been much ado about nothing if they never used it.

Mike, I’d have to agree with you about Lil. I keep waiting for her to be on target and to do something amazing. It seems like she’s got the potential, but it’s never met. That’s why I say she always disappoints, because that’s how I feel after hearing her sing. And I guess the judges had to use the save at some point, although they’re going to be crying if for some fluke Adam gets voted off before he wins, which I doubt. Still, it could happen, unless the contest is rigged.

Hey Rick DM’d you on Twitter with requested comments. Your recording tips blog is a cool idea stick with it. I’ve got a lot of questions on how to do things with my computers, audio & video feeds on a shoe string budget. I don’t know if I’m really the one to give advice as unfocused as I have been lately as I tend to intersperse my political opinions with my Audio Book reviews. But I do know what I like.. & I like what I see, you’ve got talent in your content, design & layout, keep it up!! Will talk again soon.

What I can’t figure out about Lil is why she won’t listen to the judges? She probably sees herself as a different kind of artist than they’re asking her to be. However she’s shooting herself in the foot by digging her heels in. Why not just do what they say and go further and then do what she wants when the opportunities come knocking?

Exactly my point. She does seem a bit arrogant, at least this last time. I guess she feels like she’s doing okay since she’s still in the game. But, I doubt she’ll be there after next week. Thanks for giving your thoughts!
