Well, I wrote last week, that I thought Scott MacIntyre would be a possible cut the next go around, and he was. Scott’s a good guy with lots of talent, but his rendition of Survivor’s “The Search Is Over” started out weak, then went way bad pretty fast. It was really difficult to listen to, especially when he tried to jump for those high notes. They just weren’t there. He should have stayed with the piano, but I’ll give him credit for attempting to branch out, although his guitar playing appeared to be more of a prop than anything else. At any rate, he’s made a huge name for himself on American Idol, but it was time for him to go, in light of the other Idol talent remaining. Scott’s a great, talented, courageous guy to have accomplished all that he has. To reach the top 8 on American Idol is nothing to sneer at. Best of luck to you Scott!
As for the rest of the contestants, well, I’m not going to give a blow by blow like I did last week. I’ll just mention the highlights and the rest.
American Idol Top Performance of the Week – Adam Lambert
It’s no mystery and it’s certainly not the first time that Adam Lambert has stolen the show. His rendition of “Mad World” was amazing. His vocal control and emotion were palpable. I don’t recall Simon Cowell ever giving anyone else a standing ovation before. It should be pretty obvious that we’re witnessing the birth of a great career in the life of one talented guy. While I’ve admitted from the beginning that Adam displays sublime talent, I’ve also made it known that he wasn’t my favorite, BUT he’s growing on me. His talent is undeniable. And each week he comes up with something a bit more intriguing than the last. Congrats to Adam Lambert for a great performance. He definitely displayed his theatre chops with this song, but I loved it! Last week, I compared him to Freddy Mercury. Funny, I should have saved that comment for this week.
The Rest
As for the rest of the performances, Matt Giraud was tied for second best with his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Part Time Lover”, along side of Anoop Desai with his version of “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. Personally I loved and much preferred Anoop’s song this week over Matt’s, but vocally they were pretty equal. I was flabbergasted that Anoop ended up in the bottom three, but felt that Scott MacIntyre was the one who should go home compared to the rest.
I’ll give third place to Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey. Allison’s performance of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” is her best yet, in my humble opinion. She’s growing on me too. If she keeps showing her softer side, I might just start voting for her. Danny’s “Stand By Me” was one of my favorites of his performances to date as well. I’d say these two are safe for the next couple of weeks.
Fourth place this week is awarded to Kris Allen, unfortunately. A week can certainly make a difference, huh? This song was decent, but didn’t do much for me. I’m a fan of Kris’, but his rendition of “All She Wants to Do Is Dance” was kind of boring. I’d have to agree with the judges a bit on this one, as it just wasn’t up to his usual standard. The problem here is that he’s competing to win. If he was just singing that song as part of a gig somewhere, I’d be inclined to think it was pretty good, but not great. But hey, everyone’s entitled to an off night. I’m willing to give him a pass, as obviously the American public was also.
Lil Rounds, I have to give last place. If it were up to me, she’d be gone by now. When compared to the others, she definitely deserved to be in the bottom three. Again, she’s got a great voice, but she’s been singing glorified karaoke all along and this week just reiterated it. Trying to sing, dance and act like Tina Turner while singing a pitchy “What’s Love Got to Do With It” was troubling for me. I agree with the judges where she’s concerned. She doesn’t seem to be able to forge her own style. She’s had enough time to prove that she can, but still hasn’t. Now it’s time for her to go.
