After watching all of the American Idol singers bring their vocal talent to the stage this week, I have to say that it was pretty evident to me, who deserved to win the competition (based soley upon this week’s performance). That being said, I chose Kris Allen.
Let’s face it, the guy is just flat talented – hands down. That’s not to say that the others aren’t as well but Kris really raised the bar this go around, in my opinion – moving from guitar to keyboards – quite the talent. Then, when you add the vocals, well they were spot on as he breathed life into an old song “Ain’t No Sunshine”. Wow – amazing – he’s got my vote.
As for the others, well, here are my two cents:
Anoop Desai
I like Anoop. And I’ve been rooting for him, maybe because he lives in my part of the world. But, like “Beat It” (a few weeks earlier) this song just didn’t do it for me. I have to agree with Simon on this one, it appeared unnatural for him – too awkward. He just didn’t seem comfortable with what he was doing. Vocally, he was pretty good – as he typically is, but there was nothing about this song that made him shine – and that’s what American Idol is all about – shining consistently every week. Even still, I’m still rooting for Anoop. Lots of amazing vocal talent.
Megan Joy Leaves American Idol
Megan, Megan, Megan! Well, what can I say? She’s beautiful and a joy to see every week (pardon the pun), but this week became her undoing. I’m very sad to see her go, although I’m not surprised. There’s a crazy kind of unique quality to her voice that makes her singing recognizable anywhere. Properly harnessed, that’s the kind of talent that could make someone famous. I’m not quite sure Megan has figured out exactly where her voice belongs yet. But, I really hope she figures it out before long, because I really like her. For her sake, I hope someone takes her and helps jettison her singing career. And, to be honest, I hope to be able to buy her albums one day, if she comes into her own. One thing is for sure though, she didn’t have a chance to win American Idol singing Bob Marley songs or the last three bad choices that she made. They were all totally wrong for her, which popular opinion proved by not giving her enough votes to stay in the competition. Goodbye Megan – best of luck to you!
Danny Gokey
His rendition of “What Hurts the Most” was good, but I’m just not a fan of his voice. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great singer – no question. Simon called it his best performance to date, but I don’t believe it held a candle to Kris Allen or Adam Lambert, for that matter. Personally, his upper notes sounded a bit like raspy screaming to me, but that’s my opinion. Obviously, a lot of people like this guy’s voice, so I’d bet he’s going to be around for a while longer.
Allison Iraheta
Outrageous! And no, I’m not talking about her singing, but her outfit. She looked like a girl in drag, if that’s possible. Nevertheless I suppose she was interesting to watch. I appreciate her attempt at playing an instrument (the guitar) while performing, although I don’t think it added much, if anything to her rendition of “Don’t Speak”. As always, she was pretty dead on with her vocals, but I’m not a big fan of her voice – again, just my opinion. That being said, I suppose it’s no shock that she did an impersonation of Danny Gokey singing. To me, their voices have that similar hoarse sounding, raspy smoker quality. Awesome, if that’s what you like.
Scott McIntyre
Nice performance of Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are”. And I would agree with the judges on this one – it probably was his best performance to date. There were moments of beauty in the song, but like Paula Abdul said last week, he really needs to change it up a bit. This song still seemed kind of the same as his other performances. My guess is that either Scott, Anoop Desai or Lil Rounds will get the boot next week. I think it really depends on who has the better performance.
Matt Giraud
Undoubtedly his worst performance yet – and it wasn’t bad, just not up to his standard. His version of The Fray’s “You Found Me” was pitchy and completely beneath his abilities. It was very much like a karaoke version of the original to me. Even worse was the contrived, raspy sound of his voice while singing it. I just didn’t like it. Matt Giraud is one of the most talented on American Idol this year. Each week I’ve been amazed by what he does. This week, I was sorely disappointed. His plummet to the bottom three demonstrated that the American public felt the same way. He’s got the ability to win, but if continues on this course, he’ll go home prematurely for sure.
Lil Rounds
Her version of Celine Dion’s “I Surrender All” was lackluster for me. I don’t know. I keep hearing the judges talk about what a great voice she has, but to me she keeps disappointing. I think she’s got great potential, but so far, I haven’t really seen her reach it with anything that she’s chosen to sing. She was pitchy and a bit wobbly sounding on this song. There were a few moments of beauty when she was up high, but overall, I was glad when the song ended. I think Lil also has potential to go home next week if she doesn’t find herself by her next performance.
Adam Lambert
Well, what can I say? Adam’s determined, and he’s most likely going to be the next American Idol. And that’s not my choice, it’s just a sense I have about him. He’s obviously driven to win, and every week he manages to overwhelmingly deliver. That being said, I’m not a huge fan, as he’s a bit too outrageous for my taste, but the guy can sing in the rafters – and people like that. Adam’s performance of “Play that Funky Music” reminded me of a little someone called “Freddy Mercury” from years back. Adam Lambert may not have Freddy’s amazing voice yet, but has the potential for sure. I’d like to see Adam do “Bohemian Rhapsody“. Now that, I would totally respect, if he pulled it off – which I’m sure he would.
Kris Allen
Well, Kris is the one I started with. In this case, they definitely saved the best for last. I definitely think Kris’ version of “Ain’t No Sunshine” was the best of the night and definitely his best (out of several good ones) by far. I’m rooting for Kris, although I’m not sure he’ll win out over Adam. At any rate, I sure can’t wait to see him give Adam Lambert a run for his money.
