An iPod Adventure Into Podcasting

by Rick Osborn on September 4, 2009

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve just completed an E-Guide entitled “The Wizard’s Step by Step Guide to Podcasting and Blog Audio.” Within the guide I demonstrate (in great detail) how to create, record, edit, publish and promote a podcast from start to finish using (what I believe to be) some pretty great options. Now some of these options (like Mixcraft, which I prefer for recording podcasts, for example) I have decided to use over the others, mainly due to their great functionality. If you want to learn about why I chose to use Mixcraft for my recording, you may do so by clicking here.

At any rate, I thought I’d share some of what I learned over this whole process with you. Now, if you’re someone like me (a curious self-starter), then you may be finding yourself in a position where you’re wanting to expand your online business or reach more people with your blogging. Personally, I can’t think of a better way to do this other than through podcasting.

An iPod or iPhone Adventure

I’ve had an iPod for as long as I can remember – well, maybe not that long, but I’ve had one of the original, thicker, white ones for years now. And even though I’d been seeing those slick looking newer models out there, I never really felt compelled to move myself to the point of actually getting one. Well, several months ago, I finally decided to take the plunge and buy an iPod Touch. I would’ve gotten the iPhone, but as my luck would have it, I’m stuck in an iron clad contract with another cell-phone carrier for another year or so. Anyway, I went and got the iPod Touch and embarked upon my new iPod adventure.

Wow! What a genious piece of technology the iPod Touch is! I’ve been posting blog audios and creating podcasts of my own now for years (on some of my other websites), but I really hadn’t grasped the complete picture of how this little, amazing piece of technology was revolutionizing the world. And I’m not kidding when I say that either. The iPod (as well as many other computer devices) continues to blow me away, not only with its sleek operating functionality, but more to the point –

The iPod Touch is an endless means to a wealth of fascinating education. Why? – You may ask. Quite simply, because of PODCASTING. If you don’t own an iPod, then you probably have yet to understand the impact that podcasting is having AND WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE on business and society in the next few years.

Podcasts – an Incomparable World of Education at Your Fingertips

Most everything that I do and have done online is self-taught. But, none of my current online, marketing, website and internet knowledge occurred in a vacuum. What I mean is that all of my self-taught knowledge came through a lot of research, trial and error and online education, you know with e-books and e-videos and tutorials and such. I don’t know whether you realize it or not, but there are a lot of really smart people online, who have already done what you and I are starting to do. In fact, many of them have already forged their way online and are now sharing their expertise through e-books and podcasts.

Never has this been so apparent to me as it is now that I have an iPod Touch. Whether I’m driving, or at the gym or out to eat (by myself), I’m plugged in – listening to the latest and greatest, whether it be marketing strategies or technology, how tos, sports or the news. It really doesn’t matter. Whatever my interest, I can definitely find a podcast to listen to that will educate me like never before. And what’s even better is that these podcasts are coming from real people with real know how. Never has my learning been so enhanced. And never have online businesses and entrepreneurs been so reachable and visible as they now are through podcasting.

And just with that little tidbit of knowledge, I have two questions to leave you with for today. . .

1. Are you taking advantage of the wealth of knowledge through podcasts?

AND

2. Are you Podcasting Yet?

In my next episode, I’ll delve more directly into this world of podcasting and discuss who should be podcasting and what it takes to start.

Hi Rick. I’m wondering if you’re familiar with the Amesis AM-3. I’m interested in pod and vod casting in stereo with the least fuss that sounds good, and is QUIET. I use a MacBook Pro 15, so an Apogee Duet with two mics would be ideal, and maybe that’s what I’ll do. I am looking for simpler alternatives as I move around quite a lot. Thanks! Oh yes, I believe you can get the name of my daily broadcasts from the email address! I am a trained journalist and radio veteran. Also, I do have interest from terrestrial radio to carry, so it needs to be up to broadcast quality. That, and hauling around the least amount of gear, sums up my quest. Thanks again! Dan Earhart

Dan,

Thanks for the question. I am familiar with the Alesis AM-3, in fact, I wrote a blog about it a while back. Here’s the link, if you’d like to take a look at it, but I’m sure you’ve already done your research so pretty much know what the article already states – http://www.recordingwiz.com/new-alesis-am3-stereo-usb-microphone-records-straight-to-computer/

I have to admit that I have not used the AM-3, but I have used and own some of Alesis’ mixers that I use for recording and performing and have been quite pleased with what they make. The other option that you might consider would be their ProTrack Digital Recorder for the iPod. It looks to be pretty cool, although I haven’t used it either. I’d love to look into getting one. Here’s the link – http://www.recordingwiz.com/alesis-protrack-digital-for-ipod-recording/

Let me know what you think. I know that the AM-3 connects via USB, so you would have to carry your laptop with you as you travel, which I’m sure you do anyway. It just seems that if you can get a little mic for the iPod, it would serve you better. Anyway, just an idea. Let me know what you think!

Best,

Rick
