Is Podcasting for You?

by Rick Osborn on September 11, 2009

In my last blogcast, I briefly discussed the phenomenon of podcasting via the iPhone and iPod, as well as through other mp3 devices. I talked about how overwhelmed and amazed I was at the technology available today for carrying a podcast to people, no matter where they are or what they’re doing. I also spoke about how I personally educate myself (in the “tween” times) by subscribing and listening to various podcasts. I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve been able to learn FOR FREE by tuning into podcasts and downloading them to my iPod.

And, at the end of my last blogcast, I left you with a couple of questions to think about, but there’s one in particular that I want to touch on today. . .

I have no doubt that you should be taking advantage of the free knowledge out there via podcasts, but what about doing it yourself? Is it something you should be doing for your blog or online business? Let me just say that if you’re already a podcaster, then you know the answers to this question and you probably don’t need to read or listen any further. But for the rest of you – those who are uncertain, let’s discuss a few things that you should consider to figure out if podcasting is for you.

If any of the following describes you or your situation, then I dare say that you should join the world of podcasters:

  • You have something to say. Let’s face it, we all have something to say, but if you find that you have a “guru” type personality (about any topic) or find that you’re always the “go to” guy or gal, then you might want to consider podcasting.
  • You’re an entrepreneur. Many people have typical 9 to 5 jobs, but are trying to start a side business in hopes of gaining financial freedom doing something they love. Again, podcasting might help you gain that edge.
  • You’re a blogger. Like many online enthusiasts, maybe you’re just looking to make your website or blog more dynamic or to be a better communicator. Podcasting is the perfect way to do just that.
  • You’re a business owner. Many small businesses are now podcasting, either about their business or some related topic in order to give more value to their customers.

These are just a few situations where you might want to consider podcasting. But, the fact is, anyone can podcast – plain and simple. My only real suggestion on the subject is this – don’t podcast unless you have something consistently of value to offer to the rest of us out here. The last thing any of us needs is more garbage floating around on the internet and in the media. But, if you’ve got a goal, an idea, and some expertise that others could benefit from hearing, then by all means – start podcasting. You may be amazed by the end result.

In my next blogcast, I’ll discuss some of the details that you’ll need to take care of when you begin to podcast, like needed items, etc. Meanwhile, feel free to leave me a comment and share your thoughts or concerns about podcasting.
